For one summer, the darling of New York design and contemporary art takes up residence at MAMO, on the rooftop of the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. In partnership with the Perrotin Gallery, this art center, founded by Ora-ïto, hosts the site-specific exhibition "The Basketball Modulor." In this unique work, Arsham explores themes central to his work, such as the concept of time, the relationship to history, and the sporting discipline of basketball. The installation takes place in a space that historically served as a gymnasium. With references to the colors of the Unité d'Habitation and the proportions of the Modulor, the system of measurements conceived by Le Corbusier, Daniel Arsham works with the idea of scale developed by the famous French architect while emphasizing the linear aspect of time. Thus, the exhibition hall incorporates Le Corbusier's yellows and blues, his sun motifs, to which basketballs have been added, which can be seen on banners, a flag, and on the court. Erosion, a recurring concept in Arsham's work, is reflected in sculpted basketballs placed within structures reminiscent of the famous LC4s. Finally, on the rooftop terrace, the New Yorker has chosen to install a series of bronze sculptures evoking various periods of history, such as Greek and Roman antiquity. They are adorned with crystal erosion symbols and will acquire further erosion as they remain exposed to the elements atop the Cité Radieuse, this iconic building in Marseille.
