The CHOI&CHOI gallery presents until August 6th Six Love, first solo exhibition in South Korea for the German artist Marlon Wobst.
Marlon Wobst was born in 1980 in Wiesbaden and was then trained at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, where he obtained his degree in painting and master's studies in 2011. Paintings on canvas and felt tapestries coexist there, the latter technique having occupied the artist for about ten years, alongside a practice which also includes ceramics and work on paper.
The title of the exhibition borrows from an expression that is shouted to celebrate a victory in dominoes, a game deeply rooted in Caribbean culture and which Wobst plays regularly in Berlin, among friends and neighbors.
In his compositions: afternoons by the pool, a drink shared with laughter, a game of dominoes in the park. The artist abandons grand narratives to linger on these minor episodes that weave the texture of a life.
His figures most often appear in groups, captured in dreamlike scenes where the connection between people is paramount, rather than the isolated individual. A melancholic yet joyful tone pervades these paintings, where the figures sometimes blend into their surroundings. This fluidity is never sad; rather, it suggests the fragility of memory and human attachments.
Felt tapestries offer a fresh perspective on these same motifs. Made from dyed sheep's wool and attached directly to the wall, they possess a material presence quite different from that of paintings. Many originate as painted compositions before being translated into this medium. This transformation lends familiar scenes a new tactile quality, the felt further blurring the boundary between the body and the background.
Wobst has already exhibited in Paris (Galerie Maria Lund), Vienna (Zeller van Almsick), Copenhagen and Dallas (Galleri Urbane); Six Love marks his first foray into Asia.
