From July 9 to September 12, 2026, Venice hosts "The Road," a solo exhibition by Cameroonian painter Sesse Elangwe. Through the metaphor of the road, the artist explores life's journey as a space in perpetual transformation, shaped by movement, encounters, and uncertainty.

Here, the road becomes a symbol of the human experience. It carries within it the diversity of people and stories that intersect there.
Through this body of work, Sesse Elangwe invites the viewer to question their own path and the experiences that have shaped them. "The Road" presents itself as a meditation on what we share as human beings: while each journey is unique, we all remain travelers carrying memories and stories that connect us to one another.
Born in Cameroon in 1994 and now based in San Antonio, Texas, Sesse Elangwe develops a pictorial practice centered on the human figure as a space for political and social consciousness. His work explores individual growth and self-awareness, while also examining the Black experience and the social constructs that shape it in different contexts.
His paintings are distinguished by enlarged, fixed, intense eyes. Far from being a mere stylistic device, this transformation of the gaze is at the heart of his visual language. In Elangwe's work, the eye becomes a space of vigilance and resistance: his figures do not submit to observation, they turn it back on the viewer, disrupting the usual relationship between image and spectator.
Nourished by both political thought and African literary traditions, Sesse Elangwe conceives of painting as a space for bearing witness. His figures embody a way of inhabiting the world with lucidity, maintaining a keen capacity for perception in the face of social structures, global hierarchies, and the experiences of migration and displacement. Through a practice where portraiture becomes a site of negotiation between individual experience and collective realities, the artist questions what it means to see in a world of constant transformation.
