Moving between macrocosm and microcosm, he cultivates abstraction to create mental landscapes imbued with emotion.
To see a work by Silvère Jarrosson, simply visit the panoramic foyer of the Opéra Bastille, where a monumental piece (6 x 5 m) stands, in which this former dancer with the Paris Opera has frozen movement. For over ten years, he has been his own choreographer, orchestrating colors and staging his gestures, slow or lightning-fast, to imprint their energy onto the material and summon the imagination. On the 7th floor of the Parisian institution, "Opéra pour Bastille" also engages in a dialogue with the ever-changing sky opposite, a nod to the artist's sources of inspiration.
The deltas formed by acrylic drips subjected to fluid mechanics, the iridescence resembling liquid metal, the effects of glaciers in satellite images, the infinite combination of patterns and gradients evoking butterfly wings, the stratigraphy of paint sanded to an extreme degree, or the textural effects of oil overpainting—all possess something telluric about them. Holding a master's degree in biology and geology, the artist interprets natural phenomena through his abstract expressionism, employing a cool palette of aquatic hues combined with abyssal black and icy white, and a range of earthy colors.
Transcribing the emotions felt within the mineral landscapes, new paintings will soon complement an exhibition on deserts, presented this autumn in the Great Gallery of Evolution at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The painter explores both the infinitely large, as with his circular canvases illustrating the genesis of life over 24 meters in circumference, titled LUCA and suspended in the Saint-Louis chapel of the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris in 2021, and the infinitely small seen through the prism of a microscope.
While he was initially drawn to large-scale works – including stage designs for the Opéra national du Rhin in 2021 – he has also been exploring the meticulous details of works on paper for the past two years, creating lithographs and monotypes. Silvère Jarrosson's work, which was exhibited alongside that of Olivier Debré at the Galerie Faidherbe in Paris in 2021, belongs to the tradition of lyrical abstraction, for which the creative act conveys an emotion without revealing its source.
