The iconic SoHo district, where Azzedine Alaïa first opened his boutique and launched his global success in the 1980s, is once again welcoming the Franco-Tunisian designer. At the dawn of 2023, the fashion house inaugurated a new boutique at 149 Mercer Street. “New York has always been one of the creative hearts intimately linked to the history of the house ,” explains Myriam Serrano, CEO of Alaïa. For artistic director Pieter Mulier, this city also holds a very special significance: “It is the city of resilience. And resilience is the breeding ground of creativity. That is why it is so important for Alaïa to be present again.” Like the designer , he is influenced by his passion for art and design. In the heart of SoHo, the epicenter of New York art, the boutique showcases exceptional pieces: two chairs by Donald Judd; A set of 18 prints by Robert Rauschenberg, Surface Series (from Currents) , part of the MoMA collection; a diptych by Mike Kelley; and a monumental work by Jonathan Horowitz. The clean, minimalist space was designed by British architect Sophie Hicks, who also designed the Alaïa storefronts in Tokyo and Shanghai. It fosters an encounter between body and clothing, creating an intimate environment for the house's new creations where intimacy, beauty, femininity, and art intertwine and coexist.
