In Karjat, Maharashtra, the Indian agency Wallmakers built a bridge house over a seven-meter ravine.

The Bridge House is one of the rarest things that architecture sometimes produces: a thought born of constraint, which ends up resembling an obvious truth.
In certain architectural projects, there is a logic that strikes one with its necessity. Not genius applied to a free design, but thought forced by the terrain, by the materials, by what cannot be done. It is perhaps in these cases, when the architect is backed into a corner, that something innovative can still emerge. The Bridge House, completed in 2025 by the firm Wallmakers—founded in Thiruvananthapuram by Vinu Daniel, and whose name speaks volumes about the project: working with walls, with earth, with what already exists—belongs to this category.


The site is located in Karjat, east of Mumbai, in the hilly, wooded landscape of Maharashtra. The initially promising plot turned out to be bisected by a channel, the TATA spillway, which had carved a seven-meter-deep gorge into the ground. Two plots of land, then, separated by a void. Regulations stipulated that no foundations could be laid within 30 meters of the drainage channel. Furthermore, the passage had to remain accessible for dredging equipment. The constraint seemed almost absurd. Instead of circumventing it, the architects made it the very essence of the project: a suspended bridge-house, a cocoon floating among the trees.

The structure rests on only four supports, located outside the protected area, and spans 30 meters. Its geometry is that of four nested hyperbolic paraboloids, this awkward, double-curved shape favored by engineers since Candela, which allows for high rigidity with minimal material. Here, a minimal framework of steel tubes and tensioned cables provides tensile strength; a reinforced wattle and daub and thatch envelope provides compression. Two opposing construction methods, which counterbalance each other to hold the whole structure together.

But let's return to the thatch. It's central to the project, and Wallmakers made it a subtle manifesto. Within a few kilometers, wild grass was the only material available in abundance. Rather than simply accepting it, the architects embraced it as a principle. Laid in overlapping scales that are said to evoke the pangolin's shell, this plant-based skin provides remarkable thermal insulation, disperses rainwater, and protects the interior from the Indian heat. But thatch alone has a fatal flaw in tropical regions: rodents infest it. A layer of earth plaster, applied to the shell, solves the problem by giving the structure greater compressive strength. What was presented as a weakness of the material becomes, through this addition, a structural advantage.

Inside, the house is organized around a central oculus, that opening in the roof that the Romans placed at the heart of the Pantheon and which can be found, in countless forms, throughout the vernacular architecture of the subcontinent. Rain enters, the sky is visible, and a virtual courtyard is formed by this single act of opening. The four bedrooms overlook the forest or the ravine below. The interior walls are clad in reclaimed wood from decommissioned ships' decks—dense deck timber, treated by years of salt and humidity, whose resilience has already been proven. Jute screens and metal grilles complete a simple interior, where each material still bears the mark of its history.
What Wallmakers achieves here is a kind of reconciliation between two tendencies that contemporary architecture often struggles to reconcile: structural rigor and ecological gentleness. Vinu Daniel likes to remind us that the most severe constraint is often the mother of the freest invention. The Bridge House seems to prove him right.
