Located in New Haven, Connecticut, the brutalist building was designed by the famous architect, a leading figure in 20th-century design.e The 19th-century architect Marcel Breuer, known for his iconic B3 chair, has been given a new lease on life by the Becker + Becker architecture studio. The result? A 165-room boutique hotel complete with a restaurant, gallery, and meeting spaces. This successful historic restoration of a building designed by Breuer in 1967 incorporates a significant eco-friendly component. Features include solar panels that provide 100% of the electricity for lighting, heating, and air conditioning; recycled and locally sourced building materials; and heat pumps, among other technologies. These qualities will almost certainly make the hotel the first of its kind to be certified as a Passive House in the United States, the studio asserts.
