Matisse Apartment: A Tale of Sensitive Transformation

In São Paulo, the transformation of a 1990s apartment by the firm Gurgel D'Alfonso Arquitetura illustrates a sensitive vision of domestic space. With softened lines, mineral materials, and designer furniture, the project redefines interior architecture as a fluid and profoundly contemporary experience.

Some renovations proceed by erasure, while others opt for transfiguration. The Matisse apartment belongs to the latter category. Located in the leafy Moema neighborhood of São Paulo, this 360-square-meter apartment bore the marks of an era characterized by compartmentalization, different levels, and a certain spatial rigidity. Rather than denying this heritage, architects Caio D'Alfonso and Rogério Gurgel used it as the raw material for a gentler narrative.

The project is based on a fundamental principle: transforming abrupt changes into transitions. Steps, once steep, become widened landings with rounded contours. Right angles give way to enveloping curves that follow the body's movements. Space is no longer a juxtaposition of rooms, but a fluid continuity where each threshold suggests a purpose.

This sense of unity is reinforced by an almost monolithic treatment of the surfaces. Floors, walls, and ceilings are finished with a light, seamless mineral coating that unifies the spaces and captures natural light. This off-white hue acts as a silent backdrop, revealing the artwork and furnishings without ever overpowering them. Light, amplified by the open spaces and the subtle reflections of the materials, becomes an essential component of the project.

From the moment you enter, the intention is clear. A marble bench, lit from below, invites you to slow your pace. Just beyond the main door, a sculptural totem carved from the same stone, serving as both a functional support and a striking visual presence, asserts a delicate balance between mass and lightness. Going beyond mere organization, the interior architecture creates an atmosphere.

The living room, located on the main level, is arranged around a circular rug that structures the seating into a circle conducive to conversation. The sofa C-Curvo Zanini de Zanine's work engages in a dialogue with an iconic selection of modern and contemporary Brazilian design: a pair of armchairs Zanine N signed José Zanine Caldas, the bench Magrini by Sergio Rodrigues, the armchair OK by Roberta Banqueri as well as the coffee table Sort From the Estudiobola agency. Wood, leather, stone, and a variety of fabrics compose a warm palette where craftsmanship subtly emerges. The furniture extends the architectural discourse, situating the project within a distinct local culture, bridging historical figures and avant-garde young designers.

The relationship between interior and exterior is another guiding principle. The balcony, conceived as a natural extension of the living room, blurs the boundary between inside and outside. The continuous flooring reinforces this impression of a permeable living space. A custom-made stone bench, oriented towards the horizon, transforms the terrace into a contemplative retreat, while the vegetation creates a protective screen.

The dining room takes on a more enveloping tone. The walls and ceiling, finished in a beige texture, create a warm space. The solid wood table, designed by the architects, is complemented by caramel-colored chairs. Prima of Bernardo Figueiredo, while the suspensions E-cone Designed by Carolina Maluhy for Lumini, the sculptures punctuate the space. In the kitchen, the red travertine marble island with its softened edges becomes the social heart of the apartment. Stone, present from the living room to the bathrooms, acts as a unifying thread.

In the master suite, a wooden frame surrounds the bed and incorporates travertine bedside tables. The textures complement each other in a monochrome harmony conducive to rest.

With the Matisse apartment, Gurgel D'Alfonso Arquitetura reminds us that interior architecture is not about effect, but about precision. Transforming constraints into strengths, revealing light, orchestrating materials: these are all gestures that make this residence, once marked by sharp angles, a fluid domestic landscape, embodying a resolutely contemporary art of living.
