Will isolation become the new buzzword? With Casa Branca, NEBR Arquitetura explores a new way of living, between withdrawal, tranquility and nature.
The team at NEBR Arquitetura, founded in 2017, consists of architects Amanda Brandão and Edson Muniz. Amanda Brandão is responsible for communication, particularly through visual production that showcases unique architectural designs. Edson Muniz leads the entire creative process, which he develops independently of trends, adopting a pragmatic approach characterized by straight lines and pure forms. Their latest project, "Casa Branca"—meaning "white house" in Portuguese—is a building whose exterior takes the form of a white cube in which a tree appears to have taken root. The project's appeal lies in the interplay between its spatial configuration and its radical architectural approach. Located in Paudalho, in the Zona da Mata region of Pernambuco, known for its tropical climate and lush vegetation, the property has become a true sanctuary for those who value authenticity and simplicity. The tree embodies the very essence of nature: omnipresent and essential.
Casa Branca is inhabited by an extraordinary presence: a large chestnut tree stands at the center of the white building, becoming one with it. Despite its ordinary geometry, this isolated house exudes a feeling of lightness and serenity in absolute calm. Yet its structure seems hostile: no windows are visible, the immaculate white facades are smooth and perfect, contrasting sharply with the wild surroundings. This absence of windows is an allegory of withdrawal, expressing the need to preserve privacy in an era marked by constant self-exposure. High openings allow for ventilation and natural light.
Casa Branca lives in complete harmony with nature and, consequently, its changing climate. The experience is lived as a moment disconnected from globalization, where overtourism and the irrepressible obsession with anticipating events, to the point of controlling our every move, prevent us from activating our sense of adaptation. As the project's designers emphasize: "Seemingly silent, moral beauty does not seek validation, needs neither defense nor ornamentation." The minimalism of the facades rejects all superfluous artifice in favor of a peaceful aesthetic. The experience of living within this space is entirely conceived as an immersive bubble. Casa Branca thus proposes a paradigm shift: the dream house, generally imagined open to the outside world and exposed to others, is here preserved from prying eyes.
The search for the ethereal runs through many traditions, such as the representation of universal energy and the connection to the spiritual world. It aims to improve our well-being by acting as a bridge between spirituality and tangible reality. This quest for total fulfillment is part of a return to balance and harmony. By adopting the ethereal as its guiding principle, NEBR Arquitetura conveys new values that define our living environment. The architecture firm seeks to return to the essential, to the heart of a space free from distractions. Inside, the rooms are optimized within a colorful decor that contrasts with the white facade. Abyssal blue enhances the reflective white of the walls. Curved lines create a feeling of comfort, blending poetry and functionality under one roof. Starting with a simple plan divided into four main rooms—three bedrooms, a living-dining room, and the kitchen in continuity—the flow is optimized so that every space is utilized. While access to the outdoors remains essential, the terrace is preserved, sheltered from view, in the center of the plot. By adopting a discreet and minimalist lifestyle, the occupant discovers a new way of inhabiting the space, far from external distractions.
With Casa Branca, NEBR Arquitetura transcends the mere design of a residence to offer a profound reflection on our contemporary lifestyles. In a context marked by the constant acceleration of communication, the house asserts the right to retreat, providing a space for reconnecting with oneself and one's surroundings. Silence becomes a form of presence, revealing a discreet architecture that does not seek to attract attention. Finally, the designed spaces optimize circulation and daily interactions to prevent any sense of monotony.
