Mathieu Forest Architecte and Zone of Utopia have joined forces to unveil the multifaceted nature of ice architecture. Based in Paris, the two studios have created an "urban indicator" for the Xinxiang cultural tourism center in China, designed to unite this new tourist district dedicated to winter sports. More than just a building, Ice Cubes, Built in 2021, it takes on the appearance of a monumental sculpture. These nine ice cubes, each 17 meters high, are stacked and deliberately staggered. The glass texture is made of interwoven translucent ice crystals that filter light and views into the interior. The printed glass and steel create this opaque appearance, also allowing the building to change hues: pristine white in the sunlight, hazy on cloudy days, and frosted under certain lighting. The architects also employ the metaphor of water, from the liquid of a lake to the solid body of ice, and the nebulous, diaphanous atmosphere of the landscape. The Ice Cubes center is thus defined as "a place of pleasure and contemplation," combined with "a visual experience," as its appearance changes depending on the visitor's vantage point. A unique architectural design culminates at the top with a "Sky Lounge" offering a 360° view.
