A Visionary Leadership

Melissa Loughnan, a leading figure in Australian art, was appointed director of the MAF in July 2024. Founder of the Utopian Slumps gallery in 2007, she has successfully navigated both non-profit and commercial models, participating in prestigious international art fairs such as Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Stage Singapore. Her expertise in public and private art consulting, particularly in the development of large-scale public art installations, demonstrates her ability to innovate and lead ambitious artistic projects.

According to Peter Jopling AM KC, Chairman of the Melbourne Art Foundation, "Melissa's extensive knowledge of the Australian and international art scene will be essential to driving the continued growth of the Melbourne Art Fair, now held annually in February."

A Promising 2025 Edition

MAF 2025, scheduled for February 20-23 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, will span 10,000 square meters, showcasing works by over 100 contemporary artists from 60 leading Indigenous galleries and art centres. This edition marks the fair's transition to an annual model, reinforcing its role as a key platform for contemporary art in Australia.

Melissa Loughnan points out that "The Melbourne Art Fair continues to play a vital role in the growth of the Australian art market, representing the most comprehensive and thoughtful overview of the region's thriving contemporary art scene for the past 36 years."

Leading International Commissions

The 2025 edition will feature two commissioned works from renowned international artists. In partnership with the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Singaporean multidisciplinary artist Dawn Ng will present a new video work exploring the nature of time through a hypnotic cascade of color. This work will subsequently join QAGOMA's permanent collection, further enriching the institution's artistic heritage.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre, Auckland-based artist Yona Lee will develop a large-scale installation exploring the meaning of sculpture in the digital age. This work will also be added to the partner gallery's permanent collection, demonstrating the MAF's commitment to supporting ambitious and innovative artistic projects.

A Platform for Indigenous Artists

MAF 2025 will also host a showcase exhibition of the Victorian First Peoples Art and Design Fair, which is scheduled to officially launch in 2027. This initiative underlines the fair's commitment to promoting and celebrating First Nations art and design, providing greater visibility to Indigenous artists and enriching cultural dialogue within the artistic community.

A Rich and Diverse Program

In addition to presentations from galleries and art centers, MAF 2025 will offer an expanded program including large-scale installations, video works, performances, talks, and exhibitions from the Melbourne Art Foundation 2025 commissions. This diverse range of events aims to engage a broad audience, from collectors and art enthusiasts to industry professionals, further cementing MAF's position as a major cultural event of the Australian summer.
