As the Cannes Film Festival approaches, excitement is building around the Official Selection. Between renowned directors and promising new talents, the Croisette could once again offer a rich and daring program.
Among the highly anticipated films, Terrence Malick could finally reveal The Way of the Wind, a fresco on the life of Jesus featuring a prestigious cast. As for Jim Jarmusch, he could be making a comeback with Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, a family triptych reuniting Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver. On the Asian front, Chinese filmmaker Bi Gan could make his mark with Resurrection, a post-apocalyptic drama starring Shu Qi and Jackson Yee.
With a selection that promises to be eclectic and ambitious, this edition of the festival promises to be particularly captivating. Among the French hopefuls, Julia Ducournau is generating impatience with Alpha, a still very mysterious project that would mark her comeback after Titane's Palme d'Or win. Arnaud Desplechin could also join the competition with Une affaire, a romantic drama starring François Civil and Charlotte Rampling. For her part, Rebecca Zlotowski is intriguing with Vie privée, a psychological thriller starring Virginie Efira and Jodie Foster.
American cinema could also make its mark with the eagerly-awaited release of Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning, which would coincide with the festival. Scarlett Johansson, meanwhile, could present Eleanor The Great, her directorial debut, a story of intergenerational friendship. Other projects likely to win over the Croisette include Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, a tribute to French cinema, and Ildikó Enyedi's Silent Friend, a contemplative tale spanning several eras.
The official selection announcement, expected in the coming weeks, will confirm which works will have the honor of shining under the Cannes spotlight.
