PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE
Head to Novigrad , a fishing village on the Croatian coast, where you'll find Kuca fotografa, or the Photographer's House . Once the home and studio of Nikica Karavida , the region's first photographer in the 1920s and 30s, it suffered the ravages of war in Croatia. Destroyed and left to decay, it rose from the ashes in 2015 thanks to the artist and designer Boris Kajmak, who renovated and transformed it into a cottage for two. The renovation preserved the house's original character through a respectful treatment of the structure and fabric of the old building, and the use of local materials and traditional furniture. Contemporary touches, such as cubic tiles with a three-dimensional visual effect around the bathtub and cables and pipes fixed to the walls, add a vibrant touch. A holiday home straddling tradition and modernity that takes care to pay homage to its former owner Nikica Karavida, through his photographs scattered throughout the house.
