Electric blue in the design world

Electric blue is a vibrant and powerful color, appealing to both those who value discretion and those who love exuberance. Its strength lies in its ability to capture attention while maintaining a unique elegance.

A universal primary color, the hue of the sky and the sea, playing a vital role in many societies throughout history, blue exudes both dynamic energy and a sense of comfort. In science, blue represents the hottest part of a flame, while in history, it symbolizes strength and power. Its variations over time are numerous, such as Egyptian blue in antiquity, whose lapis-lazuli-like shade adorned objects of high symbolic value, or more recently Klein blue, an intense and luminous ultramarine that became more than just a muse for the artist Yves Klein, inspiring his hypnotic, monochrome paintings.

Electric blue is a saturated variant of cyan or indigo, which has evolved throughout history depending on the pigments used. The term "electric blue" appeared in the 19th century.e century, era when scientists Edmond Becquerel and Edward Davy noted the appearance of a blue glow caused by electrical discharges, thus associating this colour with electricity and modernity.

Popularized by interior design in the 1980s, electric blue is prized for its high visibility and its optimistic, joyful energy. Far from being a muted, discreet, or even soporific blue, electric blue brightens objects and spaces. In China, its jade-like hue lends it a symbolic dimension of wisdom. This ambivalence between wisdom and power contributes to the universal appeal of this color. Known for stimulating creativity, it allows any object to stand out. Electric blue is one of the few blues that harmonizes beautifully with black, creating a striking yet elegant contrast.

Whether in a bathroom or on a sofa, whether in mosaic, leather, or other materials, electric blue can be incorporated into almost any space and object. Iconic designers like Charles and Ray Eames used it to evoke energy and movement, referencing its visual connection to electricity. Combining other colors with electric blue is a natural process. In an apartment designed by Furora Studio, electric blue takes center stage as the room's dominant color, covering, for example, the entire kitchen. When it's not the kitchen, it's the sofa that gets the blue treatment, like the one in the apartment decorated by Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studio with the help of architect Murray Barker.

Electric blue, rich in historical, scientific, and artistic significance, has transcended eras without ever losing its power and allure. Its versatility makes it a timeless and unique color that will never lose its brilliance.
