MODEL K AT THE STEINWAY & SONS PARTY

The world-renowned piano manufacturer celebrated the 120th anniversary of this iconic upright piano, a must-have in the collection.

"Nothing but a Steinway" is the tagline of this elegant yet popular piece, designed to set "an unrivalled standard in upright pianos" since 1904. A century later, the K model continues to embody the legacy of Steinway & Sons craftsmanship. Even today, the German company, founded in 1853 by the Steinweg family, has just two factories worldwide, in Hamburg and New York. Handcrafted pianos require a year's work to achieve the precision sound and perfection of design.

The Model K has many strings not in its bow, but in its harmonic structure. It has played an essential role in the creation of some of the most legendary music, offering artists a direct connection that places them physically closer to the instrument. John Lennon's Imagine is one of the world-famous scores composed on a Steinway upright piano.

Over time, the model has gained in popularity thanks to its practicality in tight interior spaces, while retaining a wide sound spectrum to give an uncompromising musical experience.

VARIETY OF NUANCES AND CASCADING NOTES

To mark its 120th anniversary, the K model is celebrated in two of the brand's customary collections. With "Crown Jewels", the vertical piano is offered in six precious veneers and adorned with a diamond inlaid in the keyboard lid. Meanwhile, for "Masterpiece 8×8", a tribute to noble woods, the piece is crafted in eight limited-edition veneers: flamed maple, oak, eucalyptus, flamed makore, Macassar ebony, olive, American walnut and Santos rosewood.

Like most Steinway pianos, the K model also features the Dolce pedal. This innovative technology, created in 2019 by the brand, enhances the playing experience and expands the possibilities of tonal expression. "It enables more precise articulation, faster repetition and a smooth transition from forte to piano, opening up new areas of musical exploration," explains Guido Zimmermann, President of Steinway & Sons Europe.

While the grand piano has always graced the finest stages around the world, the upright version continues to charm cabarets, jazz clubs and other cosy concert halls, and remains a benchmark for pianists and music lovers alike.
