The emblematic SoHo district, where Azzedine Alaïa opened his first space and launched his worldwide success in the 1980s, welcomes back the Franco-Tunisian couturier. On the eve of 2023, the house has inaugurated a new boutique at 149 Mercer Street. " New York has always been one of the creative hearts intimately linked to the history of the house," explains Alaïa CEO Myriam Serrano. For Artistic Director Pieter Mulier, the city also has a very special meaning: "It's the city of resilience. And resilience is the breeding ground of creativity. That's why it's so important for Alaïa to be here again." Like the designer, it is influenced by his passion for art and design. In the heart of SoHo, the epicenter of New York art, the boutique features exceptional pieces: two chairs by Donald Judd; a set of 18 prints by Robert Rauschenberg, Surface Series (from Currents), in the MoMa collection; a diptych by Mike Kelley; and a monumental work by Jonathan Horowitz. The uncluttered, minimal space was designed by British architect Sophie Hicks, already behind the Alaïa showcases in Tokyo and Shanghai. It gives birth to the encounter between body and garment, creating an intimate environment for the house's new creations, where intimacy, beauty, femininity and art mingle and coexist.
