Contemporary ceramics is experiencing a remarkable revival, driven by artists who are reinventing its forms and uses. Poised between painting and sculpture, it engages the viewer in a different way, more slowly, more attentively. In Paris, the Daguet-Bresson gallery is dedicating a solo exhibition to the ceramist and painter Bouchra Boudoua: an opportunity to discover a practice where clay becomes a space of memory and transformation.
Bouchra Boudoua's work is distinguished by a profound connection to the land and to gesture. At the crossroads of art and craft, her approach builds a bridge between ancestral heritage and contemporary expression. Trained in spatial design at Central Saint Martins in London, the artist draws on her Amazigh roots and the architectural landscapes of southern Morocco to create works shaped by place, memory, and the body.
Splitting her time between Casablanca and Marrakech, she anchors her practice in the earth, a medium through which she translates natural textures, symbols and chromatic variations into expressive compositions where emotion and cultural memory intertwine.
Both intuitive and physical, her process relies on a constant tension between control and transformation: gestures borrowed from painting are transposed onto clay, where the material resists, absorbs, and alters the mark. Signs gradually emerge, with chance and firing playing an active role in the completion of each piece.
This approach is also part of a collective practice. Bouchra Boudoua collaborates with artisans in Marrakech, reinterpreting traditional Moroccan craftsmanship through a contemporary lens. Her works, inspired by everyday surfaces—sun-baked walls, worn carpets, architectural details—evolve organically throughout the process. Exhibited internationally, notably in Abu Dhabi, Madrid, Doha, Casablanca, Saint-Tropez, and Marrakech, her work demonstrates a rare ability to resonate with a deeply rooted identity on a global stage.
Through this exhibition, Bouchra Boudoua transforms matter into a true language. By redefining the boundaries between art and craft, between surface and depth, she offers a sensitive and renewed experience of ceramics.
