SPY, POET OF THE SPECTACULAR

Oversized and original, the works of the Spanish artist embellish while questioning our relationship to the world.

SpY is a Spanish artist who has become known for his monumental creations, ranging from urban art to public art. His career has been structured around a series of increasingly spectacular installations and large-scale interventions.

Through his works, SpY seeks to engage viewers while making them active participants in the artistic process. His themes? Questions about the reality of human relationships, materialized in his projects that interact with the urban environment to disrupt our daily lives.

Another distinctive feature of the artist is the contrast "between the aesthetics of his works and the difficult connotations of the objects with which they are constructed – often elements used to condition people's behavior." These works are created and produced from his platform, simply named "SpY Studio," which is both a laboratory and a team of technical specialists and craftspeople.

Loops is his latest creation. A large-scale work commissioned for the main atrium of Switzerland's largest hospital, in Bern. The premise was: how can art have a positive effect on patients and contribute to their emotional well-being within a hospital setting? The answer to this question germinated over two years, giving birth to Loops. This kinetic artwork is made up of 24 large rings that move across a vast space following a series of subtle choreographic patterns.

Another installation that marked the artist's year was Blankets. Hung in the main hall of the Times Art Museum in Chengdu, China, this large-scale kinetic work is composed of hundreds of emergency blankets. It uses elements of real life to work with movement, light, and sound in a unique way. Moving in a continuous choreography, Blankets generates varying ripples throughout the room, as well as a solemn soundscape evoking a distant ocean.

In the vein of some of SpY's most celebrated projects, Blankets uses real objects as sculptural elements. The artist radically reframes these objects—often laden with symbolic connotations—to subvert expectations and meanings.
