" LOVE IS A SMOKE MADE OF THE VAPOUR OF SIGHS; PURIFIED, IT'S A FLAME SEEN IN THE EYES OF LOVERS; THWARTED, IT'S A SEA FED BY THEIR TEARS. WHAT ELSE IS IT? A WISEST MADNESS, A FEVER THAT COOLS, A HONEY TOO BITTER, A SWEETNESS THAT PRESSES, A DELECTABLE PAIN, A FORM OF SUFFERING THAT WANTS TO BE FELT. "
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, ROMEO AND JULIET.
Photographer Pierre-Émile Havette takes us on an intimate adventure to the heart of Paris's Château des Fleurs, where love, rebellion and vagueness meet dream and reality. In this Belle Époque hotel, two lovers let themselves be seduced by the atmosphere. They chat, laugh, dance, confront each other and become intoxicated, until they live out a phantasmagorical, twilight story. With this series, the photographer,
portraitist and music video director, and film enthusiast, subtly balances the play of light and movement, the intensity of textures and settings that blend classicism and modernity. His staging erases the limits imposed, taking these two adventure-seeking lovers out of their rooms and into the hotel's common spaces, emptied of all human presence.
The Sapphic duo break free from the confines and dictates of propriety to experience a free, sensual euphoria by the pool, only to be brought back to abrupt, savage reality by the butler. Pierre-Émile Havette captures the evolving, palpable atmosphere of this whimsical nocturnal escapade, which draws on the essence of Shakespearean opposing forces while leaving room for interpretation.
