SANDER VOS, TRANSCEND REALITY

The London-based Dutch photographer invites viewers to immerse themselves in his surreal, dreamlike compositions, which open up to new realities.

There's something captivating about Sander Vos' latest series, Interpolation. The 36-year-old self-taught photographer began his career as an art director before finding his way behind the lens during his travels. It was during the Covid-19 epidemic that his passion for photography took on a new dimension, leading him to use a variety of graphic tools to create compositions that disrupt perceptions.

In this game of experimentation, he puts to the test the love of geometric and architectural drawing that has sustained him since childhood. Born in the Netherlands and based in the UK capital, this virtuoso draws his inspiration from fine art and portraiture, art and design, black and white, light and shadow, superimposing images through digital and analog collage.

The result is a surreal, dreamlike relief texture that challenges the foundations of reality. Interpolation fuses different forms related to nature, the human body, the face and the geometric pattern. The photographer's aim is to shape another reality of the world according to his imagination and vision.

VISUAL INTRIGUE

" I look at photography through the lens of a designer," confides Sander Vos. No surprise there. His influences range from the Bauhaus to the work of Escher. Closer to photography, he borrows more readily from the formal explorations and enigmatic character of Erwin Blumenfeld, who revolutionized the visual arts and pushed back the boundaries of the medium.

But the surrealist aesthetic clearly haunts his work, monopolizing the viewer's gaze with its creative and meticulous use of light, contrast and negative space. Sander Vos skilfully deconstructs the meaning of what exists, questioning its nature, diverting movements, summoning the unknown and inviting discovery, the better to multiply avenues of escape, between figuration and abstraction.

In this distortion of the visual, his series of portraits with their conceptual atmospheres replay reality according to his own interpretation of the world. A timeless narrative, imbued with beauty and poetry.
