Gregory Crewdson Eveningside

FRANCE – PARIS
Trading color for black and white, Gregory Crewdson plunges us into the disillusioned heartland of America with a new series more twilight than ever. Entitled Eveningside, this final installment of a trilogy developed since 2012 is being presented at the Templon Gallery in Paris after its showing at the Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles this summer. The images, produced with the meticulous attention to detail of a feature film (both in terms of...), are the result of a large-scale production worthy of a cinematic shoot.
(Preparations 1, as well as sophisticated equipment and lighting requiring a team of 40 people), Gregory Crewdson's photographs sketch the outline of scenarios "whose beginning and end are unknown." Freeze frames, in short. An impression of suspended time even more pronounced in his latest series due to the use of black and white, accentuating the frozen aspect of the staged characters and the unsettling strangeness of the deserted streets. Suburban landscapes transformed into artificial sets, motionless characters as if petrified, frozen in their daily activities, ambiguous plays of transparency and reflections (through mirrors or shop fronts), highlighting of vehicles or transitional spaces (road intersections, taxis, porches, convenience stores…), effects of rain or fog…

Gregory Crewdson pushes the boundary between reality and fiction even further here. Through his black and white palette, he evokes classic cinema and mid-20th-century film noir. This is sure to pique the viewer's curiosity, inviting them to "make their own interpretation," to "invent their own version of the story" for each of these constructed images. Gregory Crewdson's installations require that the streets be completely emptied and closed for several days.
