PARIS PHOTO: THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL FAIR DEDICATED TO THE PHOTOGRAPHIC MEDIUM

New curatorial directions highlighting major figures in contemporary photography, but also a dialogue between the past and the present through the confrontation of vintage works with works by current artists pushing the boundaries of the discipline ever further, mark this new, highly anticipated edition of Paris Photo (the last at the Grand Palais Éphémère before its return to the historic Grand Palais).

No fewer than 180 galleries and publishers from 26 countries are gathered this year, divided into four sectors. The main sector brings together the most representative artists of contemporary photography, from Zanele Muholi at Yancey Richardson (New York) to Senta Simond at Webber (London). The Curiosa sector, which highlights the diverse practices of photography today, from documentary to performance, presents 17 artists participating in the fair for the first time, including the visual artist and photographer Ilanit Illouz at Fisheye (Paris), who received the Louis Roederer Discovery Award at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2021 for her fossilized images, crystallized by Dead Sea salt; Constance Nouvel, represented by the In Situ gallery (Romainville); Rebekka Deubner at Jörg Brockmann (Carouge, Switzerland); and Ronghui Chen (Up, Taiwan). A true hub of activity at the fair, the Publishing sector hosts 35 exhibitors this year. Finally, a new digital sector showcases a selection of galleries or "curated platforms" presenting artists who integrate digital practices into their work.

Among the many solo and duo shows in the main section, a highlight is an exploration of the 1970s photo diary with Melissa Shook's Daily Self-Portraits and Ken Ohara's 365 / Diary, presented by La Patinoire Royale in Brussels and Miyako Yoshinaga in Tokyo. Presented jointly by Jean-Kenta Gauthier (Paris) and the historic photography gallery Hans P. Kraus Jr. (New York), Is the Future in the Past juxtaposes 19th- and 20th-century photographs with contemporary works. Finally, at Howard Greenberg (New York), a selection of the greatest 20th-century photographers, from Brassaï to Diane Arbus and Saul Leiter, is not to be missed.

In the Curiosa section dedicated to emerging photography, among a rich selection, we should mention the digitally manipulated family archive images by French artist of Vietnamese origin Nhu Xuan Hua at the Galerie Anne-Laure Buffard (Paris). A work on the
disappearance which echoes the strange elliptical photographic reproductions of Jonathan Rosić presented by Archiraar Gallery (Brussels) (see Acumen no. 33).
