Until February 11, 2024, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) is dedicating a retrospective to Viviane Sassen. A first in France. From video to collage, including painting, more than 200 works trace the extraordinary career of the Dutch artist. Let's take a look.

While studying at a fashion school, Sassen turned to photography and began her studies at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) in the Netherlands. During this transition, she chose to highlight her first love at the heart of her work. The artist's photographs, which have earned her international acclaim, are distinguished by their use of shadows, vibrant colors, and the female form in motion.

The photographer's images possess a dual quality, both surreal and whimsical, immersing the viewer in an ethereal reality that seems simply out of reach. With poetry, Sassen captures fragments of life and questions the way we look at the female body.
generally represented as an object of male desire in photography. To coincide with this new exhibition, a book entitled Phosphor, combining photographs and historians' critiques of Viviane Sassen's work, has been published by Prestel in collaboration with
the MEP.
