In her photographs, she immortalizes the traces of lost identities with infinite poetry, awakening the memory of the Dutch East Indies by revealing its ghosts in the manner of a chiaroscuro painter.

A graduate of the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2019, Ilona Langbroek delved into her grandparents' past to evoke a universal experience. Her series, Silent Loss, recounts their uprooting—when they were forced to leave the Dutch East Indies, which became the Republic of Indonesia in 1945, for the Netherlands, where they felt like strangers—metaphorically reflects our quest for origins diluted by time. The artist's photographs present themselves as the reminiscence of a vanished world, transformed into a vision of the mind. Part dream, part reality, they act as a revealer of the forgotten past, capturing its very essence. A window opens in space and time, which seem suspended in these images imbued with a gentle melancholy. Between shadow and light, the atmosphere becomes hazy, conducive to all kinds of expression. Absent figures, silhouettes of sophisticatedly dressed women, their faces averted, seem to wait for life to return to the silent rooms of deserted, elegant homes. Here, a door opens onto a room, revealing a window overlooking a garden. There, a series of doors unveils an infinite number of rooms… Emphasized by the lines of the parquet flooring, accentuating these perspectives, these mise en abyme create a sense of eternity. Faced with these meticulously detailed photographic tableaux, one cannot help but think of Vermeer. Leaving a certain mystery in the air, the images give free rein to the viewer's imagination, inviting them on a mental journey that leads them back to their own nostalgia. This introspective adventure is enhanced by the serenity emanating from the gentle monochrome palette of neutral tones, where only a few flowers echo the colors of life. They evoke Asia, as do other subtly distilled details: wallpaper in the Chinese style, a parasol, precious silk, the cut of a garment, or a piece of jewelry. Meticulously documented by the artist's preparatory work, these elements give substance to the story, just like the antique lace on Dutch bodices, elaborate hairstyles, or the architecture of an 18th-century manor house ^. The symbolism of Ilona Langbroek's photographs unveils notions inextricably linked to memory, such as loss and acceptance, identity and belonging. Her images invite a poetic immersion into the heart of the richness of human emotions.
